Gentle

“It's my turn with you today,” Samuel told Richard as if he didn't already know. The thin boy with big brown eyes and russet colored shaggy hair looked ever enthusiastic. Richard couldn't help but smile at his energy.

He was thankful for a day with Samuel, almost certain that it wouldn't be as boring as hanging out with any of the other men. None of them seemed too eager for conversation. But Samuel was different. Always alert and like there was something on his mind at all times. Richard couldn't help but wonder if he would be happy to get away from the rest of the pack for a day as well.

“I'll do a good job, Jackson,” Samuel told the alpha. It wasn't like his job entailed much. Simply clean up the den and make sure Richard didn't escape. Babysitting Richard was probably a lot less labor intensive than going out hunting and foraging with the rest of the pack.

Samuel didn't look like much of a hunter. His skinniness probably made him fast, but he was too jittery to sit still for long. No, he was more than likely a gatherer. Richard could picture him flitting from bush to bush for berries or digging through the dirt for mushrooms, ever proud of whatever bounty he could bring in for the group.

“Just make sure you don't unchain him,” Jackson replied, his voice stern and dominating, as if the words were meant to drill into the core of the omega wolf.

Richard had thought he might be released soon. After the last mating when he displayed no resistance, Richard figured it should be obvious to Jackson that he wasn't going to try to escape. The wolf virus had just about conquered him. After tonight, any doubts of Richard wanting to become a wolf would be erased.

He stood back with Samuel and watched the rest of the men set out into the forest. Richard longed to join them, wondering if they did anything else besides hunting and fishing and foraging. Before, it had seemed like nothing but hard work. But lately, he had regarded it as more of a charmed life.

“Looks like it's just you and me today, pup.” Richard yawned as he watched Samuel gather the dirty dishes together to take them to the river.

They weren't too far apart in age. Richard imagined he was only a year or two older, but still, Samuel looked much younger than him. It was probably his small frame and baby face.

“Are you excited about tonight?” Richard asked.

“Oh yes, very much so.” Samuel's large brown eyes shot up to meet his. “I've never been on top before.”

Richard had gathered that by some of the conversation he had heard around the den. The other men liked to poke fun at Samuel's inexperience.

“I'm sure you'll do fine. I'm looking forward to tonight too.” Richard sat down against the cool cave wall to watch Samuel work.

“Really?”

“Yeah. I know you'll be gentle with me. You always have been.” For a moment, Richard thought he saw Samuel blush.
